Book & Lyrics by Linda Nell Cooper, Music by David Legg
Dramatic Musical
A close adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' literary classic The
Count of Monte Cristo, MONTE CRISTO is a sweeping,
romantic musical of grand adventure. The musical follows the
journey of Edmond Dantes, as he first appears on the docks
of Marseilles, until he is unjustly imprisoned, and through
his "rebirth" as The Count of Monte Cristo
-- seeking revenge on all his enemies. Along his path back
to his first love, Mercedes, Edmond meets an assortment of
characters such as Fernand Mondego, Trinette Caderousse, Jacopo
Vampa, Maximilian Morrel, and Princess Haydee of Greece. The
musical, with its cosmopolitan feel, travels from France to
Catalan to Corsica and back again. The show does not require
a set and has roles for 8 men and 7 women, as well as room
for a large chorus of gypsies, servants, sailors, and members
of French society. The music is contemporary Broadway style,
similar to Les Miserable and The Scarlet Pimpernel.
MONTE CRISTO was premiered at Liberty University
Theatre in Lynchburg, VA, and participated in the Kennedy
Center American College Theatre Festival for 2004. Linda Nell
Cooper is a professional playwright with the Dramatists Guild
of America and is a registered songwriter with BMI in New
York City. David Legg is a professional composer/arranger/orchestrator,
and his songs are registered with BMI in New York City.
